The Peripheralisation of Asylum Accommodation Project (PAAP) is looking for asylum seekers and refugees living in the Birmingham & London areas who have experience of living in Home Office hotel accommodation.
In recent years, thousands of people seeking asylum have been housed in hotels across the UK while waiting for a decision on their asylum claim. These hotels have become a significant part of the UK’s asylum accommodation system, yet we still know relatively little about how people experience everyday life within them.
As part of our research, we want to create space for people with lived experience to share their perspectives in their own words and images.
What is the project about?
PAAP is an ESRC-funded research project based at Aston University. The project explores how asylum accommodation is changing across the UK, including the growing use of hotels, former military sites, barges, and other large-scale accommodation centres.
We are particularly interested in understanding how these spaces shape everyday life, wellbeing, mobility, community, and people’s experiences of seeking asylum.
How can I take part?
If you are an asylum seeker or refugee who currently lives, or has lived, in Home Office hotel accommodation, we would love to hear from you.
Participants will be invited to:
- Take 4-5 photographs that tell us something about their experience of living in hotel accommodation
- Take part in a short interview (approximately 30-45 minutes) to discuss what the photographs mean to them
No photography experience is required. We are interested in your perspective, not your photography skills.
Interviews can take place online or in person, depending on your preference.
Will my information be confidential?
Yes. Participation is entirely voluntary and confidential. Any information you share will be anonymised and handled in accordance with university research ethics guidelines. With your permission, interviews will be audio-recorded to help us accurately capture your views.
Thank you for your time
Participants will receive a £25 shopping voucher as a thank-you for taking part.
